After a long and thorough recruiting process, standout Forward/Center Erin Garner has made her verbal pledge to continue her education and basketball career as a Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket! The talented 6’4 hoops star originally from Philadelphia, helped Trenton Catholic Academy (Hamilton,NJ) win a State Championship in the 2012-2013 Season and now plans to take her talents to Atlanta, Georgia.
Garner a dynamic, rising senior had been recruited, by several great schools, before choosing the Atlantic Coast Conference school in Atlanta. She received her first Scholarship Offer at the age of 14, while a freshman, at Springside Academy (Philadelphia, PA), from Penn State University and her second from West Virginia University, as a sophomore. Garner continued to receive additional offers and interest, largely due to her outstanding play at summer exposure events, since 8th grade.
By the beginning of June, Erin had narrowed her list of school of choice down to ten possible schools. They were LSU, SYRACUSE, WAKE FOREST, TEMPLE, SETON HALL, OKLAHOMA, GEORGIA TECH, AUBURN, LOUISVILLE, NC STATE. There was no particular order, but all 10 schools offered her desired courses of study, had great basketball tradition, a great coaching staff and were recruiting her pretty hard.
As July approached, three schools stood out from the rest for Garner, SYRACUSE, GEORGIA TECH, LSU. They were all great choices and Garner had connected with the assistant and head coaches, on a personal level. There was only a question of proximity to home, climate and Conference. Syracuse is located just 3 hours away from her home and plays in the ACC, which is a great Conference, but located in a very cold and frigid climate. LSU is in a great, warm climate and is a member of the SEC Conference, but is over 20 hours from home, which made it unlikely that Erin would ever play anywhere even close to home. Georgia Tech, an ACC Conference member, is located in sunny Atlanta, Georgia and although it’s quite far from home, some of its Conference members, Syracuse, Pittsburg, Virginia, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and Boston College, are located between just 3-7 hours away from her New Jersey home.
After attending Elite Camp and having an opportunity to interact with the current Georgia Tech players, during Drill Sessions, Garner was convinced that GT was the right fit for her. On the evening of July 3, 2013, Erin contacted Head Coach, MaChelle Joseph and made her verbal pledge to attend the University of Georgia Institute of Technology.
Erin has been a Philly Freedom Star since 2006 and we have watched her grow and develop into an outstanding person and remarkable basketball talent. We are very proud that she has earned a full Scholarship to an excellent academic institution, with a BCS level basketball program. Congratulations to Erin and her family!
